Need A Russian Estate Attorney? What To Know First

Tracy Roberts

Are you looking for an estate attorney to help you figure out a will,\ so that everything with your family and business is handled and managed properly when you pass? If you are Russian and you worry about not having a lawyer that can work with your family, you need to make sure that you find the right attorney for the job. There are many attorneys that are of the same heritage, or speak the language and understand the culture. Here are some of the things to do and look for when picking a Russian estate attorney.

Find a Russian Lawyer with Russian References

You aren't just looking for a Russian last name when picking an attorney, but someone who comes from a deep family line, who knows the culture and what you are looking to do with your money and your wishes. Talk with them about other estates they have managed in the area for the Russian community, and see if they can speak the language on their own.

Bring all Estate Information

Once you have found someone that you would like to use, it's important that you bring all of your estate information. This means all of your account information, family information, debts, business paperwork, and a list of assets. You want to be sure that you can figure out what you have, what will have to be paid off, and what you want to leave behind.

Be Honest

You have to be completely honest with your lawyer if you want everything in your will to be relevant. This is especially true about:

  • Marriages
  • Debts
  • Who you trust as the executor
  • Choosing a medical power of attorney

If you have a doctor in the family and you want them to be your power of attorney if you are in a medical state and can't make your own decisions, don't feel guilty choosing them over a closer family member. Pick who you are comfortable with and be honest.

Once you have the will, you want to let a couple of people know what lawyer created the document and had it notarized, so that someone will be able to find it when they need to. If you don't want anyone to see it or read it, than it may be best that you don't keep a copy laying around your home or business, and instead that you keep it in a safe deposit box.
