Divorce can be a financially scary time, especially if you had formerly depended fully upon your ex-spouse to be the breadwinner. Now you are not only about to be single again, you also need to make sure there is money coming in to pay your bills. Spousal support is one thing that can help you as you regain your feet after your divorce. Temporary Support
This form of support is for a prescribed amount of time, and it usually begins before the divorce is finalized. For example, in some cases temporary support may only be paid while the divorce is pending to ensure that financial obligations are met by both parties up until the point that the marriage is formally dissolved. Temporary support may only stay in effect for the period leading up to the final proceedings, or it may continue for a short period of time afterward to ensure that the selling of certain assets, like an expensive family home, is completed before all forms of support are cut.
Rehabilitative Support
This form is similar to temporary support in that it is only paid for a set amount of time. This support is generally for when one spouse was a stay-at-home spouse for a number of years, which means they need time to retrain or gain an education before they can begin earning a living for themselves. It may be set for a specific time, such as two years, or it may be contingent on graduation from a course of study or finding gainful employment.
Permanent Support
This type of support is awarded when one spouse has the ability to financially support the other spouse at a level approaching their former standard of living. Generally, the other spouse cannot be self-supporting to qualify for this type of award. Although this form of alimony is called permanent, it rarely is. For example, if the spouse on support remarries or has a sharp increase in income, the court may dissolve the alimony agreement.
Further Considerations
Keep in mind that spousal support is not the same as child support. You can qualify for spousal support even if you do not have minor children. If you do have children, you can be awarded both spousal and child support.
